What kinds of gifts do chinese men and women consider appropriate or desired ?

I know in America women like .. flowers, candy, perfume , jewelry ... etc ... men may be more finicky but .... what about gifts in the chinese culture ? What are the right things ... what are wrong ?

What kinds of gifts do chinese men and women consider appropriate or desired ?
I"m a Malaysian Chinese. If you really don't know what gifts to buy, you can always put some money in a red envelope (called "ang-pau") and give it to them. But make sure the envelope is red (or pink is also acceptable), but NEVER a white one, especially if the occasion is an auspicious one because white and black are considered bad luck. However, if you are giving money to a Chinese family holding a funeral ceremony, then you can give it in a white envelope, not a red one.

Another thing about gifts particularly given for their birthdays. DO NOT, I repeat, DO NOT GIVE THEM CLOCKS, any kind be it big or small. Because 'giving clocks' means 'sending the person to his grave' as the Chinese believe.

Hope I've helped you in some way.
Reply:depends on the relationship btw sender and receiver.

If you send a gift as a foreigner, something made in US would be preferred.
Reply:even though i'm asian american , i know a bit about chinese culture. in china , the men are the ones who buy gifts for the women. from what i've been hearing in the younger generations, alot of the women there are materialistic , they only date guys with their own house and car.

other than that , in traditional chinese culture in general, people don't like to take gifts from others because then they'll lose face. face is like a concept of pride and honor. they don't like other people paying for you.
Reply:money is always well appreciated. that goes for all people.
