What stuff to be provided to start a gift shop?

I'm planning to open a gift shop before valentine 2007. I believe my idea will work. However, I need many advice from anyone. Suppose you're someone who wants to give a present to your beloved person. What stuff most likely you buy from a gift shop?(excluding flower and chocolate)

What stuff to be provided to start a gift shop?
This depends on what types of gifts you wish to sell. Are they Christmas gifts or birthday gifts? Naturally, you want to provide the essentials for gifting (i.e., wrapping paper, cards - not necessarily by Hallmark, bows, balloons, etc.). You may also want to investigate what types of items people "gift" to others. For example, some people simply despise having to wrap or ship a gift item; therefore, they may be more inclined to give a gift card (i.e., phone service, restaurant, et. al.). Giving people the option to pick the type of item gifted should, in theory, lead to greater sales. Finally, you may want to also consider a growing phenomenon - the fact that people are now starting to make their own gifts. You could add classes to your store to help people learn how to make gifts of their own inexpensively and provide incentives (i.e., store purchase discounts) when they sign up. That can build loyalty to your store and provide another revenue stream in case the sale of your retail items slows. Bottom line: Make sure you focus on an underserved niche in the gift marketplace, and then, exploit the hell out of it!!! I hope this helps you, and I wish you success in your small business endeavor.
